In 1541 a royalist supporter replaced Gonzalo as governor of Quito, and Francisco Pizarro was killed in Lima by the allies of Diego de Almagro (Lándazuri Camacho 1983:169). Gonzalo was able to gain control of most of the former Inka empire, but by 1545 royalist forces under the first viceroy of Peru, Blasco Nuñez Vela, were still in control of the Quito region.
