The choice is between sliding and hinged doors. Sliding doors are useful as they can be left open for ventilation on particularly hot days. However, they have moving parts that are more likely to break down than those in hinged doors. Hinged doors can slam shut in winds, leading to breakages. Drainage A small gutter at the base of sloping roofs is useful. Rain dripping straight down from roofs can form large puddles and make the area around the base of a greenhouse soggy. You can use guttering to channel rainwater into a water butt for the garden or greenhouse.

Gas heaters The simplest gas heaters to use are those that work from natural gas, but a supply will need to be installed by a qualified gas fitter. Heaters that run off bottled gas are also available, with the added benefit of producing carbon dioxide, which promotes plant growth. However, they also emit water vapour and the added moisture in the atmosphere can lead to an increase in plant disease problems. Conservatories may be heated by extending the central heating system. Once installed, this is a simple and effective method of heating.

This is particularly effective on benches covered in capillary matting, as this absorbs the water well. The water then evaporates and increases the humidity evenly throughout the area, while reducing the temperature. From spring to autumn damp down at least once a day. In hot weather you will need to damp down several times a day. Group orchids and ferns together to keep the humidity high Cacti and succulents need little or no feeding during the winter months. Food Plants that are grown in greenhouse borders and those that are grown with their roots planted outside of the greenhouse will only need occasional feeding once they are established, as they have a relatively large area of soil to exploit for nutrients.
