She married fellow Puritan Simon Bradstreet in 1628, and she and her husband sailed to the New World on board the Arbella in 1630, the voyage that led to the founding of Massachusetts. At first Bradstreet suffered from shock at finding herself so removed from the comforts of home. But in 1632 she began to write poetry. In 1650 her brother-in-law, apparently unbeknownst to her, oversaw the publication of her first book of poetry in London, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung up in America.
