If you are a pre-college student you can start preparing for a career in Earth science by enrolling in the college preparation program and doing well in all of your courses. Basic knowledge of climate can be used within shorter term weather forecasting using analog techniques such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO), the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO), the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) which is also known as the Arctic oscillation (AO), the Northern Pacific (NP) Index, the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO).

Our aim is that upon graduation you will be able to compete for careers in Meteorology and Climatology. Biological oceanography seeks to understand the population dynamics of marine organisms and their interaction with their environment. It occupies a room about 70 yards wide by 55 yards deep. Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. When climates start to change, animals and plants become endangered.

Glaciers everywhere are melting and disappearing fast, threatening the primary source of clean water for millions of people. The question is no longer if our climate will change, but how will it change and how will we adapt to these changes? Figure 1 shows global surface temperature for the past 5.3 million years as inferred from cores of ocean sediments taken all around the global ocean. When water temperature reaches around 28°C (82°F), the trade winds weaken or reverse direction and blow east (towards South America).

Performance Indicator 2.2: Explain how incoming solar radiation, ocean currents, and land masses affect weather and climate. 2.2a Insolation (solar radiation) heats Earth's surface and atmosphere unequally due to variations in: the intensity caused by differences in atmospheric transparency and angle of incidence which vary with time of day, latitude, and season characteristics of the materials absorbing the energy such as color, texture, transparency, state of matter, and specific heat duration, which varies with seasons and latitude. 2.2b The transfer of heat energy within the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and Earth's surface occurs as the result of radiation, convection, and conduction.

Planners and policy makers want information about decadal variability in order to make decisions in a range of sectors, including for infrastructure, water resources, agriculture, and energy. Please see the Feature Summary for more details. In addition, Ruddiman believes CO2 changes during the last millennium cannot be explained by external factors but rather by forest regrowth following episodes of bubonic plague (when less agriculture was done), which, among other similar factors, were responsible for the Little Ice Age (1300-1900 AD). (For a brief summary of the paper, see a New York Times article, "Scientist Links Man to Climate Over the Ages" .) Two editorial comments appeared alongside Ruddiman's paper in the December 2003 issue of Climatic Change (see Crowley, 2003 and Crutzen and Steffen, 2003 ).

The other spheres are the biosphere (Earth’s living things); the cryosphere (Earth’s frozen regions, including both ice and frozen soil); the hydrosphere (Earth’s liquid water); and the atmosphere (the air surrounding our planet). It may have been relatively basic compared to modern models, but nevertheless they found that the movement of heat through convection kept the temperature from running away to extreme levels: however, if the amount of CO2 doubled, temperature would rise by some 2°C.
